Guarding the chickens.
August, 2009
I hear from many of you who follow my life here at the farm through my website and know that you are aware that,  like many of you,  I have lost beloved family members over the last 12 months -  our wonderful Dad, my lovely doberman queen, Zelda and most recently Cyrano, our handsome and elegant doberguy.  All of these losses have been tremendous and have created big holes in my life.

While none of these special characters can be replaced, I felt a need to fill the doberman space as a doberless home just did not seem like home..  I got in touch with my old friend at Illinois Doberman Rescue, Pam Abare, whom I became friends with during the time I lived in the Chicago area.  During that time, I was honored to work with Pam as a foster home for rescued dobermans waiting for their forever home.  What a great time in my life and what fabulous work the folks at Illinois Doberman Rescue do.  Pam is one of the most dedicated people I know and has put together a group of people with a common passion to place lost and homeless dobermans in homes where they will be loved and protected.

As I began my search, a little female doberman came into the program with a very sad story.  She was found, a 3 or 4 months old little dobergirl, not only a stray but with deformed front legs that made it seem incredible she could have survived on her own at all.  Illinois Doberman Rescue did just that.....came to the rescue and, with the help of their fabulous vet, Dr. Radowski in Fox Lake, Illinois, have provided her the opportunity to live a normal life.

I am so happy to say that she has now come to live with me....my new little adopted girl, a real gift and a real little character.  Her name is Ziva and she is a very energetic and active little girl that is keeping all of us on our toes.  I've included photos on this page and you can see some photos of Ziva "before" and "after".  Ziva is now working on her obedience training and learning about living on a farm.....and she is quite amazed!!

I know that if you are reading this you are an animal lover.  I'm sure you are aware of the plight of the many homeless animals that are dropped off at shelters if they are lucky....or if not so lucky, abandoned and often left to starve to death with no food and water, sometimes in the dead of winter.  I don't know if you realize the amount of work, money and love that is required to save these animals.  Illinois Doberman Rescue is fortunate to have a wonderful vet that often works miracles, just like Ziva.  But all of that takes resources...people, time and money.

I know that times are tough but with tough times the numbers of homeless animals increases dramatically as people lose their jobs and homes.  So, please pick a shelter, a breed rescue, the ASPCA or any other organization that devotes so much time, energy and love to these animals. and if you can, help out either by volunteering your time and/or home, or by contributing cash or making donations of food or other supplies to their efforts.

And, oh yes, if after reading about Ziva you should feel inclined to help out Illinois Doberman Rescue, please visit their website at ildoberescue.com  and when you do, say hi to Pam for me. Thanks.
