Why Your Skin Loves Tallow in the Colder Months
You know that point in the year when the weather changes and suddenly your skin does too?
Dry legs. Rough elbows. Tight skin. And somehow the lotion that worked perfectly fine all summer just… isn’t cutting it anymore.
We feel it too.
Around here, colder weather usually means reaching for something a little richer, and tallow is one of those simple ingredients we keep coming back to.
So, Why Does Skin Get So Dry in the Winter?
Cold air tends to hold less moisture, and once you add indoor heat, hot showers, and chilly days outside, your skin can have a harder time hanging onto its own moisture.
Your skin naturally relies on fats, or lipids, as part of its protective barrier. When that barrier gets dry, you start noticing the familiar signs: flaking, rough patches, tightness, and skin that feels like it needs lotion five minutes after you applied it.
Sometimes, your skin just needs something a little richer.
What Exactly Is Tallow?
Tallow is rendered animal fat.
Ours begins with grass-fed, grass-finished beef suet sourced from a regenerative farm. Suet is a naturally firm, rich fat that can be slowly rendered and purified into the smooth tallow we use in our skincare.
It’s simple, traditional, and gives body care the kind of richness that feels especially good when the weather turns cold.
Unlike a lightweight lotion that can seem to disappear almost as soon as you apply it, tallow and other rich oils help create a layer over the skin that slows moisture loss while leaving dry areas feeling softer and smoother.
That’s one reason tallow body care can feel so different from the products you might reach for during summer.
Why Sourcing Matters
Not all beef fat is exactly the same.
For our body butter, we start with suet and render it slowly and intentionally. Just as importantly, we care about where it comes from.
Using grass-fed, grass-finished beef from a regenerative farm means looking beyond the final jar and paying attention to the whole story behind the ingredient—how the animal was raised, how the land was cared for, and how the ingredient was handled along the way.
We love ingredients like this because they feel connected to the way we already think about food and farming.
Where did it come from?
How was the animal raised?
How was the ingredient handled?
Those questions matter to us whether we’re talking about what goes on our dinner table or what goes into a jar of skincare.
A Little Richer Than Your Everyday Lotion
There’s absolutely a time and place for a lightweight lotion.
But when the cold sets in and your elbows and legs start feeling like sandpaper, sometimes you want something that actually sticks around.
Our tallow is blended with carefully chosen butters and oils to create a soft, whipped body butter that melts as you rub it into your skin.
No synthetic fragrance. No unnecessarily complicated ingredient list.
Just rich fats and simple ingredients that leave dry skin feeling soft and comfortable.
Our Favorite Way to Use It
Right after a shower.
Pat your skin dry, leave it just a little damp, and massage a small amount of body butter wherever you tend to get driest.
Elbows, knees, legs, hands, heels, whatever needs it.
And truly, a little goes a long way.
Start with less than you think you need, warm it between your hands, and let it melt in.
A few other things we try to keep in mind when winter skin shows up:
-
Skip the scorching-hot showers when you can.
-
Don’t overdo it with scrubbing or exfoliating.
-
Moisturize before your skin gets painfully dry.
-
Keep things simple when your skin is feeling irritated.
Nothing revolutionary. Just a few small habits that can make colder weather a lot easier on your skin.
Keeping Skincare Simple
There’s always another product we’re being told we need.
Another serum. Another active. Another step.
But around Willow Moon, we tend to come back to the opposite idea.
What can we simplify?
We like knowing where our ingredients come from. We like using things with a purpose. And we like skincare that feels connected to the same values we bring to our food and farming.
Tallow fits pretty naturally into that.
It’s traditional, simple, incredibly rich, and exactly the kind of thing we find ourselves reaching for when the temperatures start dropping.
So if your summer lotion has officially stopped doing the job, maybe your skin is just telling you it’s time for something a little richer.
Your winter skin might be ready for tallow.
